Makoto Murata graduated from the Painting Department of Tokyo Zokei University. He entered PIA Cooperation, where he launched the PIA art column. After studying in London, he became an independent art journalist. His major publications include "Aato no mikata", translated books include "Aato no Mikata" (Looking at Paintings) by Jude Welton, edited books include "Shakai to Aato no Enmusubi". He is a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Zokei University, Keio University, Jissen Women's Educational Institute. He is the president of BankART School. In 2005, he restarted painting.
