Consider how Web 2.0 technology has created new relational and communication structure, or how our everyday experiences are facilitated by user-friendly technology. The intersection between art and technology has not only been articulated within the sphere of new media art practice. The application of scientific knowledge for practical purpose also see artists engage, imagine and represent with the public through different technological structures. This session will consider a number of artistic practices and their methodological processes in Japan, focusing on innovative arenas of engagement from the streets of Akihabara to the internet imageboard.

This session will consider how art professionals and artists consider art as a tool for alternative education and thinking. It reflects the broader use of art and visual culture in the process of initiating critical dialogue across a number of different cultural and political contexts. Central to the discussion will be distribution and sharing resources as a form of engagement. More importantly, seeking to question the idea of education and how it can be of value to the public, our speakers will invite audience to reimagine what other forms of learning and teaching can be.

This session concludes our discussion program by exploring the relationship between art and urbanism. More than half of our world's population reside in an urban environment. Whether it is the crowded yet orderly metropolis of Tokyo or the chaotic growth of Manila's sprawl, for many artists, the city remains a muse and inspiration that they hope to address through their art practice. How can artists contribute critically to the discussion of how we inhabit and experience urban space? What strategies and models can artists deploy to understand our role and place within the concrete jungle?
