変化する光の中で《The Scroll》に出会い、その生成のプロセスの只中に立ち会うための招待。作家の生涯にわたる営みとして、この作品は時間の中で展開し続ける。THE ROOMにおいて、鑑賞者は生成の途中にある作品と向き合い、時間の断片が立ち現れ、広がり、結びついていく様を目撃する。
《The Scroll》は2017年に開始された紙による継続的な作品であり、高さ10cm、現在の全長は95メートルに及ぶ。完成と未完成のあいだに常に位置し続けるこの作品は、長い時間の中で1キロメートルにまで伸びていく可能性を持つ。
作品は主に具象的であり、場面や風景、空間が連続的に変容しながらつながっていく。参照、記憶、想像をもとに構築され、スクロールという形式を通して視覚的リズムと意味の構造を探求する。そこでは構成が記号的関係の足場となる。
素材性は作家の実践の中心にある。アラビアゴムで結合された顔料、そして筆や紙の特性が、描線の幅と質、さらには表面における光の作用を形づくる。
2024年以降、「Institution」と呼ばれる並行的なセクションが展開されている。これらは美術館や教会などの制度的空間の視覚言語に着目し、展示や配置のシステムがいかにしてアイデンティティや記憶、信念に関する物語を構築するのかを問いかける。
本インスタレーションでは、《The Scroll》は時間順ではなく配置される。反復するモチーフや記号が遠い過去と現在を結び、多層的な時間の共存を可能にする。THE ROOMは引き続き制作の場として機能し、会期中も作品は壁面上で成長し続ける。
Along the Scroll it’s an invitation to encounter the Scroll under shifting light and within the ongoing process of its making. A lifelong commitment of the artist, the work unfolds across time, and in THE ROOM the visitor meets it mid-becoming, as segments of time emerge, expand, and connect.
The Scroll is an ongoing work on paper, 10 cm high and currently 95 metres long, begun in 2017. It exists in a constant state of completion and unfinishedness, and over a long life it could extend to a kilometre.
Largely figurative, the work moves through scenes, landscapes, and spaces that gradually transform into one another. Drawing from reference, memory, and imagination, it explores the scroll as a structure for visual rhythm and meaning, where composition becomes a scaffolding for semiotic relations.
Materiality is central to the artist’s work. Powdered pigment bound with gum arabic, together with the properties of brushes and paper, shapes the range of marks and the play of light across the surface.
Since 2024, parallel “Institution” sections have developed, engaging with the visual language of museums, churches, and other institutional spaces. These reflect on how systems of display construct narratives about identity, memory, and belief.
In this installation, the Scroll is presented outside chronological order. Recurring symbols and motifs create connections across distant and recent moments, allowing multiple temporalities to coexist.
THE ROOM remains an active workspace, and over the course of the exhibition, the work continues to grow on its walls.

スヴィ・カルヤライネン（1996年生）は、絵画、版画、インスタレーションを横断して活動するフィンランド出身のアーティストおよび教育者である。彼女の制作の中心には、2017年に開始された紙による継続的な作品《The Scroll》がある。完成と未完成のあいだに常に位置し続けるこの作品は、時間とともにさらに拡張していく可能性を持っている。
カルヤライネンの実践は「アーティファクト」という概念に向き合い、人為的に作られた物がその物質的特性だけでなく、触れた手の痕跡、記憶、文化的背景をどのように内包するのかを探求する。《The Scroll》自体もまたアーティファクトとして捉えられ、経験の流動の中にパターンを見出し、捉え、明確にしようとする試みである。
これまでの展示歴には、ニューヨークのOld American Can Factory、インドネシアのGaleri Kertas、そして近年では日本・本州の築200年の寺院での展示が含まれる。Parsons School of Designにてメリットベースの奨学金を得てBFAを取得。フィンランド、ラトビア、日本、インドネシアでの国際レジデンシーに参加。Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant受賞。
Suvi Karjalainen (b. 1996) is a Finnish artist and educator working across painting, printmaking, and installation. At the core of her practice is The Scroll, an ongoing work on paper begun in 2017. Existing in a constant state of completion and unfinishedness, the work has the potential to extend significantly over time.
Karjalainen’s practice engages with the idea of the artefact, exploring how man-made objects carry not only material properties but also traces of touch, memory, and cultural context. The Scroll itself is conceived as an artefact, an attempt to capture, clarify, and trace patterns within the flux of lived experience.
Her work has been exhibited at the Old American Can Factory in New York City, Galeri Kertas in Indonesia, and most recently in a 200-year-old temple on Honshu, Japan. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design with a merit-based scholarship and has participated in international residencies in Finland, Latvia, Japan, and Indonesia. She is a recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant.

レナ・アフラモワは、黄金町を拠点に活動するウクライナ系イスラエル人のアーティスト／キュレーターであり、長期滞在アーティストとして活動を続けています。日本で20年にわたり暮らしながら、写真、テキスト、空間インスタレーションにまたがる複合的な実践を展開してきました。
彼女はハイファ大学で教育カウンセリングの修士号を取得し、ニューヨーク・フィルム・アカデミーを通じて東映京都撮影所の映画制作プログラムを修了しました。彼女の写真作品は、The New York Times、BBC News、Newsweek などで紹介されています。また、アート、教育、社会的実践をつなぐ協働プロジェクトにも取り組んできました。
彼女の作品は、身体と空間の関係を探求し、とりわけ感情、記憶、アイデンティティが、生きられた環境のなかでどのように形づくられるのかに注目しています。彼女の実践の中心にあるのが、川沿いに位置するスタジオ兼ギャラリー THE ROOM であり、そこは創作の場であると同時に、キュレーションの実験や協働のための空間としても機能しています。
Lena Aframova is a Ukrainian-Israeli artist and curator based in Koganecho, where she has worked as a long-term resident artist. Having lived in Japan for the past 20 years, she has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning photography, writing, and spatial installation.
She holds an MA in Educational Counseling from Haifa University and completed a filmmaking program at TOEI Kyoto Studio through the New York Film Academy. Her photography has been featured in The New York Times, BBC News, and Newsweek. Her projects include collaborations that connect art, education, and social engagement.
Her work explores the relationship between body and space, with particular attention to how emotion, memory, and identity are shaped through lived environments. Central to her practice is THE ROOM, her studio and gallery by the river, which functions both as a site of artistic production and as a space for curatorial experimentation and collaboration.
