動物園で、動物を見ているのだろうか。それとも、歴史や権力、娯楽産業によって構築された風景を見ているのだろうか。

本展「カラオケ猿　大サーカスの旅」は、ハンブルク、福岡、新竹を横断しながら、サーカスと共に巡業する架空の存在〈カラオケ猿〉の旅を通して、20世紀初頭に形成された動物展示のあり方と、その背後にある、まなざしの奥に潜む植民地的な権力関係を辿る試みである。

1907年、ハンブルクに開園したハーゲンベック動物園は、檻を用いない開放的な展示形式を導入し、近代動物園のモデルとして世界的に影響を与えた。動物園の成功とともに、動物サーカスは各地を巡業し、異国の動物を「見世物」として流通させていった。

1933年、ハーゲンベック‧サーカスは東京万国婦人子供博覧会で公演を行い、日本および東アジアにおける動物サーカスの印象を大きく変化させた。同年に開園した福岡動物園（東公園）、そして1936年に開園した新竹児童公園はいずれも、ハンブルクの動物園を模した「象の門」を入口に持つ。

海を越えて移動する動物、複製される建築、巡業するサーカス。本展は、これらの断片をエフェメラ、テキスト、ドローイング、紙芝居という形式で再構成し、見ること／見せることの歴史を問い直す。

Karaoke Monkey: The Big Circus Journey

When we enter a zoo, are we observing animals—or are we witnessing a landscape shaped by history, power, and entertainment?

Karaoke Monkey: The Big Circus Journey traces a transnational narrative linking Hamburg, Fukuoka, and Hsinchu through the fictional journey of a Karaoke Monkey touring with a circus. The exhibition revisits the emergence of early twentieth-century animal display and traces the colonial power relations embedded beneath the act of looking.
Founded in 1907, Tierpark Hagenbeck in Hamburg was the world’s first zoo to replace cages with open landscape displays. Its innovative model quickly spread worldwide, accompanied by traveling animal circuses that transformed exotic animals into spectacles for mass consumption.

In 1933, the Hagenbeck Circus performed at the Tokyo World’s Fair for Women, reshaping perceptions of animal circuses in Japan and East Asia. That same year, Fukuoka Zoo opened with an entrance modeled after Hagenbeck’s iconic Elephant Gate. In 1936, Hsinchu Park followed, featuring a similarly designed gate by Japanese architects.
Animals crossing oceans, architectural forms in motion, and traveling spectacles form a network connecting Germany, Japan, and Taiwan. Through ready-made objects, writing, drawings, and paper theater, this exhibition reconstructs fragments of these histories, inviting viewers to reconsider how acts of looking are intertwined with entertainment, mobility, and power.

アーティスト

ケネス・リン・ティンユー

アメリカ・ペンシルベニア州で生まれ、2歳で台湾に帰国。現在はドイツ・ハンブルクを拠点に活動している。
リンの作品は、「漂浮するノスタルジア」を捉えることに焦点を当てている。主に絵画、印刷、イメージの生成を通して、軽やかで間接的な方法により、イメージの背後に潜む権力関係を探究している。台湾の複雑な歴史および地政学的背景を参照しながら、明確な政治的記号を用いるのではなく、流動的な感性をひとつの経路として、方向性を持たずに揺れ動くノスタルジアの状態を提示する。
また、出版、音楽会、インスタレーション、パフォーマンス、ワークショップなど、多様な形式で他のアーティストとの協働も行っている。2022年より、アーティスト・コレクティブ「麻将朋友（Mahjong Friends）」および「リビングルーム・コレクティブ（Living Room Collective）」のメンバー。2023年には、アーティストブック/ zineの出版レーベル「遊牧木瓜出版（Nomad Papaya Books）」を設立。

Kenneth Lin Ting-Yu (b. 1994)

Born in Pennsylvania, United States, Kenneth Lin Ting-Yu returned to Taiwan at the age of two and is currently based in Hamburg, Germany.
Lin’s practice focuses on capturing a sense of “floating nostalgia.” Working primarily with painting, printmaking, and image production, he explores the geopolitical histories and power relations embedded within images through a light and indirect approach. Drawing on Taiwan’s complex historical and geopolitical context, rather than employing explicit political symbols, he uses a flowing sensibility as a pathway to evoke a form of nostalgia that remains unanchored and directionless.
He also engages in collaborative projects with other artists across various formats, including publications, concerts, installations, performances, and workshops. Since 2022, he has been an active member of the artist collectives Mahjong Friends and Living Room Collective. In 2023, he founded Nomad Papaya Books, an independent publisher dedicated to artist books and zines.
