映像作品の制作には想像以上の時間と手間がかかると言われています。わずか1分の映像制作に何か月も費やすことは珍しくありません。しかし私たちは、いまや画面やスクリーンを通して、いつでも、どこにいても映像の異世界を当たり前のように視聴／体験しています。それにもかかわらず、映像にこだわって制作を続けるアーティストは、まるで映像制作によって生きている人間のようです。
今回はそのようなアーティストの生態の不思議さに注目し、ラテン語の「Homo人類」という語と「Tentorium幕」という語を組み合わせた「Homo-Tentorium 影像人間」をタイトルとしました。また単なる映像ではなく、原始的な映像体験のルーツであるアジア由来の影絵劇から「影」を充てた「影像」を訳語にしています。
影像を使ってそれぞれの世界観を表現するアーティストたちの作品から「何故、映像メディアを使うのか」という問いに迫りたいと思います。
It is said that creating a video work is extremely time and energy consuming. It is not rare for a one-minute long video work to take several months to be made. However, viewing and experiencing a different world through a screen has become accessible anytime and anywhere that we haven taken the magic of its creation for granted. Yet, those artists remain obsessed with video- and filmmaking as if they could not live without creation of video.
In this exhibition, we put a spotlight on the obsession of those video artists, and use Latin words ‘Homo’ meaning ‘human’ and ‘Tentorium’ meaning ‘screening’ to make a new word ‘Homo-Tentorium’ as the title. The kanji character ‘影’ which means shadow also serves as a reference to shadow play, one of the first iterations of moving images especially in Asia.
Why do they use video as a medium to express their various worldviews? We may find hints through their works.
