私は自身のアートプラクティスを通じて「子育て」と「美術制作」の間に様々な関係性を見出しながら、「愛、気遣い、喜び、家庭内空間、世代を超えた関わり、国境を超えた可能性」など多岐に渡るテーマを模索している。3歳になる娘、陶子とのコラボレーションは、家族間のヒエラルキーを変えること、子供に自立心を芽生えさせること、また親であることの経験をヴィジュアルアートに変換する手段として行っている。
「Toko Singing “Happy Birthday” to Friends and Family」は2022年3月から制作が続いているビデオ作品である。歌うこと、キャンドルの火を消すこと、ケーキを食べること、プレゼントを渡すことなど、誕生日にまつわる様々な行為に陶子は興味がある。そこで私は陶子が家族や友人たちにバースデーソングを歌うところをビデオ撮影して記録することにした。行事やパーティーの行なわれ方も文化により異なってくる部分は、陶子がオハイオにいる家族や友人たちへ歌うところから、日本の群馬の場面、再度オハイオへ戻る過程の中で観てとることができる。このビデオ作品には、1年以上かけて撮影された複数の誕生日が15分にまとめられておりループ再生される。陶子が目に見えて成長し、両親ではない大人たちと交流していく姿を見ることで、観客には国境を超えた祝い事を通じて社会の一員になっていくプロセスを感じとってほしい。

私は見知らぬ人々と共にカメラに向けてのパフォーマンスを行う。レンズの前で私たちの身体は奇妙に操られていく。1秒足らずの露光の間に2つの身体は記録され定着する。私たちのパフォーマンスはポートレートになる。
私たちの身体は二つの塊であり、互いに押し合うことも引き離されることもある。体毛と肌がフレーム内に質感を与えていく。想像上の空間を生み出すのだ。私たちのパフォーマンスはランドスケープになる。
まばゆい光が私たちの世界を照らす。私たちの身体が去った後、そこには私たちの会話や交渉、または行為といったものを連想させる何かが残される。それは私たちが経験した感覚的なものの名残であり、時には優しく、反対に暴力的でもあることもある。しかし、常に解放的であることは変わらない。私たちのパフォーマンスはスティルライフになる。

My art practice draws connections between artmaking and fatherhood through explorations of love, care, joy, domestic space, intergenerational relationships, and transnational possibility. I collaborate closely with my three-year-old child, Toko, as a method to disrupt the hierarchies of family, empower a young child and translate the experience of parenthood into visual art.Toko Singing “Happy Birthday” to Friends and Family is a video work that has been ongoing since March 2022. Toko is very interested in the ritual of birthdays: singing, blowing out candles, eating cake and giving gifts. I make video recordings of Toko singing “Happy Birthday” to our family and close friends. The ritual translates across cultures, as we see Toko singing with family and friends in Ohio and then in Gunma, Japan and then back in Ohio. The series condenses over a year’s worth of birthdays into a 15-minute loop. Visitors will see Toko visibly aging, witness Toko interacting with adults who are not her parents and observe a process of socialization through transcultural ritual.  

Future Family

I perform for the camera with strangers. We manipulate our bodies together in front of the lens. An exposure is made in a fraction of a second and the two bodies are frozen. Our performance becomes a portrait. 
We are two masses pushing together and pulling apart. Hair and skin texture the frame. We create an imaginary atmosphere. Our performance becomes a landscape. 
Bright light illuminates our world. We remove our bodies leaving behind abstractions which suggest our conversation, negotiation, and action. They are the residue of a sensational experience, sometimes tender, other times violent, but always liberating. Our performance becomes a still life.

Shohei Miyachi

宮地祥平 (1989年静岡生) はコミュニケーション、アイデンティティ、パフォーマンスのテーマを中心に制作を続ける写真家である。School of Visual Artsより美術学士号 (写真専攻) 、Pratt Instituteより美術修士号 (写真専攻) を取得。近年の展示に「Shohei Miyachi and Context」MATTE HQ (ニューヨーク) 2021年、「Clandestine – The Human Body in Focus」コブラ近代美術館 (アムステルダム) 2021年、「Blow」The Container (東京) 2021年などがある。
