Born in Iloilo, Joar Songcuya is currently based in La Union in the Philippines. Trained as a marine engineer, he initially worked onboard international commercial ships for over a decade before becoming a full-time artist. His solo exhibitions include, The History of Water (2021), Atlantiko, Pasipiko, Artiko (2022), and The Sea Is Not A Quiet Place (2022). He is interested in water and statelessness, migration, oceanography and engineering, marine ecology and sea-based labor, issues that are pertinent to his homeland, the Philippines- a maritime country.
