Machi Project

A new town development project will begin as part of Koganecho Area Management Center’s ongoing efforts. Through three core programs, the project aims to develop the area by maximizing the unique spaces and human resources found in the Koganecho Area. This year’s programs of “Space Design”, “Research” and “Promotion”, and take unique approaches from different perspectives. This project is intended to continue for several years in order to facilitate the participation of various individuals and organizations in the town development of the area.

Space Design Program

This program aims to add functions that are needed in the town by utilizing the spaces designed and created by artists and creators. This year, the program sets up three functions, including “residence space”, “library” and “information”, and called for spatial design proposals. The selected plans are realized and presented as part of Koganecho Bazaar 2015. After the exhibition, other creators will use the spaces as a platform for various activities.

Research Program

This is a research program organized in collaboration with university laboratories with an aim to objectively evaluate the town development project in the Koganecho area. The program calls for research projects that fit in with the themes suggested by the organizer, such as the changes in awareness of the local residents, actual conditions of artists and creators’ activities, assessment of the effects of events and Koganecho Bazaar. It also invites proposals for different research themes and methods. The outcome of research and study will be applied to the planning of the future projects of town development.

Aside from artists and creators, Koganecho area also has many unique shops of note, a resource of various skills, rich knowledge and a variety of concepts. The program exposes these elements during the exhibition of the Koganecho Bazaar and creates opportunity for a wider audience to experience the charms of the neighborhood. This year, the program facilitates the local shops, artists and creators to collaboratively plan and realize “machizemi” (town seminars held in shopping streets in various locations in Japan).
