Space Design Program

In this Space Design Program, artists and creators are required to produce spatial works in order to add necessary facilities to the town. This time, the three specific areas of “residence space”, “library” and “information” were chosen and an “open call” for spatial design proposals was held from May 29 (Fri.) to July 10 (Fri.) 2015. As a result, 5 proposals were selected as the best designs. The selected proposals will be realized and presented as a part of Koganecho Bazaar in 2015. After the exhibition these spaces will continue to be used as active platforms for creative human utility.

〈Evaluation/Review〉

For such ideas as converting the exterior walls into a blackboard, this plan was commended for its creating a relationship with the surroundings. Additionally, the proposal made plans for rooms A and B to become a hub for neighborhood anti-crime efforts, a place in which people would be able to gather. Before the implementation of the plan however, greater consideration should be made particularly about the shape of the utility pole and whether it would be appropriate to be used as a bulletin board.

〈Evaluation/Review〉

Small modules or “bookshelves” build up the space. The plan was commended for a composition that not only expressed the density of accumulated books, but also incorporated the presence of its users. Additionally, the choice of building with larch plywood, the material used in the existing floor, successfully creates a spatial unity.

〈Evaluation/Review〉

A waterproof layer, covering the interior from wall to floor, creates possibilities not present in standard residency studios. Sufficient consideration is required in order to ensure the performance of the waterproof layer, including the construction of the groundwork.

Removing the floors opens up the space and makes it possible to create large-scale art-works. The plan was commended for its versatility in accommodating to the spatial needs of artists. The design of the façade and sash doors need careful consideration.
