Koganecho Bazaar 2015 -Art Together with the Town-

Marking its 8th edition, Koganecho Bazaar 2015 presents various programs under the theme of “Art Together with the Town”. Based on the past experiences and achievements, the festival reapproaches the area of Koganecho from two different perspectives: “art” and “town development”.

The art project comprises three programs, and invites 14 groups of Japanese and foreign artists mainly from Asia. The first program is the “Bazaar” program, in which artists present new works created through their approximately two-month residency. The second is the special exhibition entitled “Masaki Miyamae and Workshop” that features art workshops conducted by the late Masaki Miyamae, who continued to develop artistic expressions in various media in 1980s and 1990s until his early death at the age of 43. The third program is “Yokohama-Chengdu Artist-in-Residence Exchange Program”, which facilitates two-way exchange of artists between Yokohama and Chengdu, China. Additionally, in cooperation with the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery, Koganecho Bazaar 2015 simultaneously organizes a solo exhibition of Chisato Tanaka, who participated in Koganecho Bazaar 2008.

The town project "Machi Project" presents three programs of "Space Design," "Research" and "Promotion". It features architectural renovation projects, organizes research sessions, and carries out collaborative projects between artists and the neighborhood businesses.

We hope that Koganecho Bazaar 2015 – Art Together with the Town provides an opportunity to encounter new communities brought by the coexistence of the town and art.

Koganecho Bazaar 2014

Director Statement

Koganecho Bazaar is uniquely organized around the artist in residence program. Japanese and foreign artists stay in Koganecho for two to three months in order to create and present new works. At the same time, artists engage exchanges with their colleagues as well as with other people in the area.

This year many of the participating artists continue their residency throughout the exhibition period.

By doing so, we envision the exchanges between you, the audience, and artists. We believe that not only encountering an artwork, but also meeting the artist, or the maker of the artwork, be an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the thoughts and social context behind the work.

Additionally, this year’s Bazaar spotlights architectural renovations, a main strategy applied to the town development efforts in Koganecho. Architects and artists are selected through an open call to realize their renovation plans of existing buildings, which will be present during the festival. After Koganecho Bazaar, these buildings will be used to serve specific functions.

Please visit Koganecho and see the changes happening in the neighborhood. And please meet the artists.
