Shunsei Obata

Shunsei Obata was born in Chiba, Japan in 1920. He entered the Army Nakano School in 1937 and was detained in Siberia (Harbin, Samarkand) in 1945. During his detention, he was copying collection artworks in Repin Museum and he was a teacher in Moscow University. He returned to Yokosuka, Japan in 1952, got married in 1955, and subsequently lived in Hatsunecho, Naka Ward, Yokohama. He serialized illustrations of Yokohama folk tales in “PTA Yokohama” for 15 years starting in 1971. Published “Yokohama Folktales” in 1987 (Yokohama City PTA Liaison Council). Passed away in 2006 at a hospital in Mitsukyo, Yokohama, at the age of 86.
