Artists and shops

Masashi Sogabe + Sogabe Laboratory, Kanagawa University

Project overview
Koganecho studio is a block of artists’ ateliers constructed from timber. The location is just minutes away from the Kogane-cho station under the Keihin Electric Express railway, on a street lined with trees that runs parallel to the Ooka River, where small buildings are sandwiched between alleyway-like streets. In relation to the wide street lined with trees, the stainless steel exterior of the structures under the railway line reflects the ambience of the area, while in relation to the alleyway-like streets, the inviting wooden folding gates that have deliberately been lowered give a sense of openness. Inside you will find an earthen floor extending into the space, and a veranda that creates an atmosphere where visitors can sit and talk easily.

Project overview
Hinode studio is scheduled to open under the Keihin Electric Express railway line close to Hinode-cho station. The studio faces the Ooka River and resembles a glass showroom. In order to make full use of the favorable location next to the river, a three-block studio form was adopted. By doing this, the space between the blocks can be used during the event while also serving as a path connecting two streets. There is also a promenade at a height of two meters that serves to link all three spaces. Overlooking the river, the promenade grants views of the exhibitions and the artists’ workspace inside, while from inside you can sense the people walking along the promenade. It is hoped that this promenade will be the start of a series of projects to link one archway to the next.
