Archie Oclos is a visual artist known for creating site-specific works that deeply engage with the everyday realities of Filipinos. Drawing from his extensive community work across the Philippines, Oclos crafts pieces that reflect the struggles, resilience, and stories of marginalized communities. His practice pays close attention to the environments and materials he uses, ensuring that each work resonates meaningfully within the context of the space it inhabits. Born to a family of farmers and raised in poverty, Oclos’s early life in the rice fields profoundly influenced his perspective and artistic vision. Those formative experiences shaped his unwavering commitment to representing minorities and amplifying the voices of the oppressed through his art. His socially engaged practice seeks not only to document but also to provoke dialogue about issues of inequality, injustice, and the possibility of hope amid hardship. Oclos’s dedication has been widely recognized both locally and internationally. He was named a Grantee of the Asian Cultural Council in 2024, enabling him to undertake an art residency in New York, USA, where he further explored the intersections of advocacy and creative expression. He was also awarded the prestigious Ateneo Art Awards in 2019, the CCP Thirteen Artists Award in 2018, and was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia lists in both 2017 and 2018 for his significant contributions to contemporary art.
